Lower Eyelid Lift/Blepharoplasty

A lower eyelid lift, or lower blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to reduce under-eye bags, smooth wrinkles, and restore a youthful appearance. This surgical technique is ideal for individuals experiencing puffiness, sagging skin, or dark circles that make them appear tired or older than they feel. A lower eyelid lift enhances the eyes by carefully repositioning fat and tightening the skin.

What is a Lower Eyelid Lift?

A lower eyelid lift targets excess fat, loose skin, and muscle laxity beneath the eyes, contributing to puffiness and an aged appearance. This procedure removes excess fat to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags while tightening the surrounding skin for a smoother appearance. Depending on your unique needs, the procedure can be performed through a hidden incision inside the lower eyelid or beneath the lash line for optimal correction.

Candidates for a Lower Eyelid Lift

Ideal candidates for lower blepharoplasty are individuals who struggle with persistent under-eye bags, hollowing, or loose skin that does not improve with non-surgical treatments. This procedure is beneficial for those who want a long-lasting solution to tired-looking eyes. During a consultation, Dr. Daraei will assess your skin elasticity, facial structure, and aesthetic goals to determine if a lower eyelid lift is the right approach for you.

Lower Eyelid Lift Procedure

A lower eyelid lift is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of correction needed. The procedure involves making a small incision inside the lower eyelid or just beneath the lash line to access and reposition or remove excess fat. If necessary, the skin is gently tightened to eliminate fine lines and sagging while preserving a natural appearance.

Lower Eyelid Lift Recovery

Recovery from lower blepharoplasty is typically mild. Most patients experience mild swelling and bruising for the first week. Cold compresses and keeping the head elevated can help reduce swelling. Most individuals can return to normal activities within seven to ten days, with final results becoming more noticeable as residual swelling subsides. There is minimal scarring as the incisions are hidden within the eyelid or along the lash line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What issues can a lower eyelid lift address?

A lower eyelid lift (lower blepharoplasty) primarily addresses under-eye bags, excess skin, and sagging, allowing you to achieve a more refreshed and youthful appearance. It can treat any puffiness created by bulging fat, fine wrinkles, and skin laxity in the lower eyelid area.

What are the types of lower blepharoplasty?

There are 3 major components of the lower eyelid that can be addressed with blepharoplasty: skin, excess fat, and volume loss. There are 3 major types of lower blepharoplasty: lower skin pinch blepharoplasty, transconjunctival blepharoplasty, and skin-muscle flap blepharoplasty. Skin pinch blepharoplasty addresses only external skin. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty addresses only excess fat and sometimes volume loss. Skin-muscle flap blepharoplasty can address skin, muscle, and sometimes volume loss. Volume loss can also be addressed with fat transfer.

How long does a lower blepharoplasty take?

Lower blepharoplasty surgery typically takes 30-60 minutes for both eyes, though it may take longer depending on the complexity and if additional procedures are performed. During your consultation, Dr. Daraei can give you a more specific timeline.

What type of anesthesia is used during a lower blepharoplasty?

At our office, the type of anesthesia depends on the type of lower blepharoplasty performed. A skin pinch only can be done under local anesthesia. Transconjunctival and skin-muscle flap blepharoplasties are often performed with sedation using total intravenous anesthesia and/or general anesthesia. Which one is right for you will depend on your medical history, the complexity of your procedure, and what Dr. Daraei recommends.

Can a lower eyelid lift be combined with other procedures?

Absolutely! A lower eyelid lift can be combined with a number of other cosmetic procedures. While it’s most often combined with an upper eyelid lift for a complete eye rejuvenation, it can also be combined with a brow lift, facelift, and fat transfer or dermal fillers.

How long do the results of a lower blepharoplasty last?

The results of a lower blepharoplasty are long-lasting, often remaining visible for 10 to 15 years. In some cases, with proper aftercare, the results can last a lifetime.

Is a lower eyelid lift painful?

The lower eyelid lift procedure itself is not painful at all, thanks to the use of anesthesia. Afterward, you may feel some discomfort, but you’ll be given prescription pain medication to help you feel as comfortable as possible as you heal.

When can I wear makeup after a lower blepharoplasty?

We typically recommend waiting about two weeks before you start wearing makeup around the eye area again. That said, it can depend on how well the area is healing. Dr. Daraei will give you specific instructions on when you start wearing makeup again.

“Absolutely no Judgment”

This was my first foray into the world of plastic surgery. While I try to keep myself in shape, the condition around my eyes made me look old and tired. Of course, I was nervous when I met with Dr. Daraei and his staff for the consultation. Everyone was very nice and there was absolutely no judgment projected toward me by any of the staff.
In fact, the entire staff and Dr. Daraei seemed genuinely enthusiastic about helping me feel better about my appearance.

“Dr. Daraei is the best doctor”

If you're interested in rhinoplasty, Dr. Daraei is the best doctor to go to! I came to him with a deviated nose and severe breathing issues.
Now, only a month out of surgery, my breathing is amazing and my nose looks beautiful! I cannot say enough amazing things about Dr. Daraei and his work!!

“I love the results”

Dr. Daraei was initially recommended to me by a friend. I was particularly picky about who I wanted to do my rhinoplasty because I have ethnic features and I've also heard of people needing more expensive repeat procedures to fix their first rhinoplasty.
He has made the experience very smooth by being thorough, reassuring, and patient. I am about a year post op and I love the results, can't recommend him enough!

“I never felt rushed”

During the consultation all my questions were answered and Dr.
Daraei suggested the tissue removal from my eyelids. He mentioned the slightly swollen look that I thought was a sinus condition. When he showed me how much of my eyelid was hidden, l was amazed. He then took the time to explain the procedures I might want and answered every question I had. At no time did he make me feel pressured or rushed or that he had somewhere else to go.

“Would do it Again!”

Dr. Paul Daraei performed blepharoplasty on both my eyes. He removed the very pronounced bags from under my eyes and removed tissue from my upper eyelids that made it look like I did not have eyebags, when my eyes were open. Let me say this is the best thing I have done for my appearance and would do it again!
