At Daraei Facial Plastic Surgery, every scar revision procedure is carefully planned based on the location, size, and characteristics of the scar, as well as your individual healing patterns. Successful results depend not only on surgical technique but also on your commitment to proper post-operative care. Scar maturation is a gradual process, and it may take up to one year for your final results to fully develop.
What to Expect After Your Procedure
As you begin your recovery, it is normal to experience several temporary symptoms as your body heals:
- Swelling and Bruising: Mild to moderate swelling and bruising around the treated area are normal following scar revision surgery. Swelling is typically most noticeable during the first 48 to 72 hours and gradually improves over the following weeks.
- Discomfort: Mild soreness, tightness, tenderness, and itching are common during the early stages of healing. Most patients find discomfort manageable with prescribed or recommended pain medications.
- Redness and Firmness: The revised scar may initially appear red, pink, raised, or firm. This is a normal part of the healing process and will gradually improve over the coming months as the scar matures.
- Numbness and Sensation Changes: Temporary numbness, tingling, or altered sensation around the surgical site is common and typically improves over time as nerves heal.
- Drainage: Small amounts of clear, pink, or blood-tinged drainage may occur during the first 24 to 48 hours. This is generally normal. Persistent bleeding or excessive drainage should be reported to our office.
- Dressings and Sutures: Depending on the location and extent of your procedure, dressings, steri-strips, or sutures may be present after surgery. Do not remove them unless specifically instructed by Dr. Daraei. They provide important support during the initial healing phase.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Your post-operative visits are an essential part of your recovery and allow Dr. Daraei to monitor your healing progress. Please attend all scheduled appointments as directed.
When to Call Our Office Immediately
Please contact our office right away if you experience any of the following:
- A fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
- Increasing redness spreading beyond the incision site
- Rapidly worsening swelling or significant asymmetry
- Excessive bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
- Pus-like, foul-smelling, or cloudy drainage
- Severe pain not relieved by prescribed medication
- Separation of the incision or wound edges
- Any sudden change that concerns you
What to Avoid After Your Procedure
Proper care during the healing process is essential to achieving the best possible scar outcome. Please follow these guidelines carefully:
- Do not pick, scratch, or peel scabs from the incision site.
- Avoid excessive stretching or tension on the treated area for several weeks following surgery.
- Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, bending, or vigorous physical activity for at least two weeks or until cleared by Dr. Daraei.
- Do not submerge the incision in pools, hot tubs, lakes, or the ocean until fully healed.
- Avoid direct sun exposure to the healing scar. Ultraviolet exposure can cause permanent discoloration and negatively impact the final appearance of your scar.
- Do not smoke or use nicotine products for at least one month following surgery, as nicotine significantly impairs healing and scar quality.
- Avoid alcohol during the first week after surgery, particularly while taking prescription medications.
- Do not apply makeup, skincare products, scar creams, or topical treatments directly over the incision unless specifically approved by Dr. Daraei.
- Avoid wearing tight clothing or accessories that may rub against the surgical site.
- Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E supplements, or other blood-thinning medications unless approved by your surgeon.
- Do not operate a motor vehicle while taking narcotic pain medications or within 24 hours of your last dose.
General Post-Operative Wound Care Instructions
Incision Care
Keep the incision clean and dry as directed. Clean the surgical site gently according to your post-operative instructions and apply any prescribed ointments as directed. Avoid excessive manipulation of the incision. Once the incision has fully healed, Dr. Daraei may recommend silicone gel, silicone sheets, scar massage, or other scar management treatments to optimize your final result.
Dressing Care
Leave all dressings in place unless instructed otherwise. If a dressing becomes loose, wet, or soiled, contact our office for guidance before replacing it.
Sleeping Position
If your scar revision was performed on the face, head, or neck, sleep with your head elevated on pillows during the first week to help minimize swelling. Avoid placing direct pressure on the treated area while sleeping.
Ice Therapy
Cold compresses may be applied during the first 24 to 48 hours to help reduce swelling and discomfort. Apply ice for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off, ensuring a protective barrier remains between the ice pack and your skin.
Blood Clot Prevention
While resting, gently move your legs, flex your feet, and take short walks throughout the day to encourage circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.
Medications
Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed. Use prescription pain medication only as needed and transition to Tylenol (acetaminophen) when appropriate. Always eat before taking narcotic pain medications to minimize nausea. Because anesthesia, narcotic medications, and decreased activity may contribute to constipation, consider using an over-the-counter stool softener while taking prescription pain medication. If antibiotics were prescribed, complete the full course as directed.
Diet
Begin with light meals and advance your diet as tolerated. Focus on staying well hydrated and consuming nutritious foods rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, as these nutrients support wound healing and tissue repair.
Scar Revision Results
Scar revision surgery can significantly improve the appearance of a scar, helping it blend more naturally with the surrounding skin and reducing visible irregularities, thickness, or tension. However, it is important to maintain realistic expectations. Every incision heals by forming a scar, and individual healing patterns vary from patient to patient.
The revised scar will often appear more noticeable during the first several weeks as redness and firmness develop. This is a normal part of the healing process. Over the following months, the scar will gradually soften, flatten, and fade. Most patients continue to see improvements for up to 12 months or longer after surgery.
