Facelift and Neck Lift Post-Op Instructions

A facelift and neck lift are cosmetic procedures that rejuvenate the lower face and neck by addressing loose skin, underlying tissue laxity, and age-related changes in facial contours. By repositioning deeper facial structures and removing excess skin, these procedures help restore a smoother jawline, firmer neck, and more youthful appearance while maintaining your natural facial characteristics. Although you will notice improvements early in your recovery, your final results will continue to develop as swelling resolves and healing progresses.

At Daraei Facial Plastic Surgery, every facelift and neck lift is carefully tailored to your unique facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. Following your post-operative instructions is essential to promoting proper healing, reducing the risk of complications, and achieving the best possible outcome. While much of the initial swelling improves during the first several weeks, subtle healing continues over the following months.

What to Expect After Your Procedure

During your recovery, you may experience several temporary symptoms, including:

  • Swelling: Swelling throughout the cheeks, jawline, neck, and around the ears is expected and is often greatest during the first several days before gradually improving.
  • Bruising: Bruising may extend from the face into the neck and upper chest. This is a normal part of healing and typically fades over the next few weeks.
  • Tightness: Your face and neck may feel tight as the repositioned tissues adjust and begin to heal.
  • Temporary Numbness: Decreased sensation around the ears, cheeks, jawline, or neck is common after surgery and generally improves gradually over time.
  • Mild Discomfort: Tenderness, soreness, and a feeling of pressure are expected during the early stages of recovery and are usually well managed with prescribed medication.
  • Drainage Tubes and Dressings: Depending on your procedure, temporary surgical drains and a supportive dressing may be placed to reduce fluid buildup and swelling. These will be removed during your follow-up appointments according to your surgeon’s instructions.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Scheduled visits allow Dr. Daraei to monitor your healing, remove drains or sutures when appropriate, and ensure your recovery remains on track.

When to Call Our Office Immediately

Please contact our office right away if you experience any of the following:

  • A fever of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
  • Sudden swelling or firmness on one side of the face or neck
  • Excessive bleeding through your dressings
  • Thick, cloudy, or foul-smelling drainage from an incision
  • Severe pain that is not relieved by prescribed medication
  • Increasing redness spreading around the incision sites
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Any unexpected symptom that causes concern during your recovery

What to Avoid After Your Procedure

To support proper healing and protect your results, please follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, bending over, or activities that significantly raise your blood pressure until approved by Dr. Daraei.
  • Do not smoke, vape, or use nicotine products for at least one month following surgery, as nicotine slows healing and increases the risk of complications.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking prescription pain medication and during the early stages of recovery.
  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, herbal supplements, or other blood-thinning medications unless approved by your surgeon.
  • Avoid excessive turning or stretching of your neck during the initial healing period.
  • Do not expose your incisions to direct sunlight until they are fully healed. Protect healing skin with a hat or other recommended coverings when outdoors.
  • Avoid hair coloring, chemical treatments, or excessive heat around the incision sites until your surgeon advises it is safe.
  • Do not drive while taking narcotic pain medication.

General Post-Operative Care Instructions

Incision Care

Keep your incision sites clean and dry while following all wound care instructions. Incisions are typically hidden around the ears and within the hairline. Apply any prescribed ointments as directed, and avoid picking at scabs or healing skin.

Head Elevation

Sleep with your head elevated above your heart using several pillows or a recliner during the first one to two weeks. Elevation helps minimize swelling and promotes healthy circulation. Avoid sleeping on your side until your surgeon indicates it is appropriate.

Compression Garment

If you are provided with a facial or neck compression garment, wear it exactly as instructed. Compression helps reduce swelling, supports healing tissues, and encourages the skin to conform to its new contours.

Walking and Circulation

Light walking several times each day is encouraged shortly after surgery to improve circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. Avoid prolonged bed rest while also allowing yourself adequate time to recover.

Medications

Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed. Use prescription pain medication only as needed, transitioning to acetaminophen when appropriate. Complete any prescribed antibiotics, and speak with your physician about using a stool softener if constipation develops.

Nutrition and Hydration

Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious, protein-rich meals to support the healing process. Soft foods may be more comfortable during the first few days if your jaw feels tight or sore. Maintaining proper hydration and a balanced diet helps promote tissue repair.

Facelift and Neck Lift Results

As swelling and bruising continue to improve, your facial contours will gradually appear smoother, firmer, and more youthful. While many patients notice a significant improvement within the first several weeks, subtle swelling may persist for several months before the final results become fully apparent. Attending your follow-up appointments and carefully following your recovery instructions will help maximize your long-term outcome.
