What Is Septoplasty?
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure for a deviated septum, a condition where the wall between the nostrils is displaced, partially or completely blocking airflow. The septum is composed of cartilage and bone and, when misaligned, can cause breathing difficulties, snoring, and sinus problems. During septoplasty, the septum is straightened and repositioned to restore proper nasal function. While this procedure focuses on functionality, it can also be combined with rhinoplasty to refine the nose’s appearance. Since septoplasty is the only procedure that directly corrects a deviated septum, it is the most effective option for patients seeking long-term relief.

Candidates for Septoplasty
Candidates for septoplasty include individuals struggling with persistent nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils, chronic sinus infections, or frequent nosebleeds. Those experiencing sleep disturbances due to airway obstruction or suffering from recurring sinus issues may also benefit from this procedure. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the results. A consultation with Dr. Daraei will determine whether septoplasty is the right procedure for you based on your symptoms.

The Septoplasty Procedure
Septoplasty is performed under general or local anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Daraei makes a small incision inside the nostril to access the septum, ensuring no external scarring. The deviated portions of cartilage and bone are either reshaped or removed to allow for better nasal symmetry and airflow. Additional support structures may be reinforced with cartilage grafts. Once the septum is realigned, the incision is closed with dissolvable sutures, and nasal packing or splints may be placed to support healing. The procedure typically takes about one to two hours.
Septoplasty Recovery
Recovery from septoplasty is relatively smooth, with most patients experiencing mild swelling, congestion, and discomfort in the first few days. Bruising is typically minimal since no external incisions are made. Most patients can return to work or daily activities within a week, though full healing may take a few months. To ensure optimal results, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, keep their heads elevated while resting, and follow post-operative care instructions provided by Dr. Daraei.
Septoplasty Results
After surgery, many patients notice immediate relief from congestion, snoring, and sinus-related issues. As swelling subsides, results continue to enhance over time, allowing for long-lasting benefits. If combined with rhinoplasty, patients may experience cosmetic refinements and improved breathing.
