Upper Eyelid Lift/Blepharoplasty

An upper eyelid lift, or upper blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to correct drooping eyelids, remove excess skin, and restore your appearance. This technique is ideal for individuals who experience sagging skin that creates a tired or aged look, affects their vision, or causes general discomfort. An upper eyelid lift enhances the appearance and functionality of the eyes by carefully removing excess tissue and tightening the surrounding skin.

What is an Upper Eyelid Lift?

An upper eyelid lift targets the excess skin and fat that accumulate on the upper eyelids, contributing to a hooded appearance. This procedure opens the eyes, reducing skin laxity and restoring a more open and alert expression. The incisions are discreetly placed within the natural eyelid crease, ensuring a seamless, natural-looking outcome with minimal scarring.

Candidates for an Upper Eyelid Lift

Ideal candidates for upper blepharoplasty are individuals who struggle with drooping upper eyelids, excess skin that impairs vision, or puffiness that does not improve with non-surgical treatments. This procedure is particularly beneficial for those whose eyes appear tired or aged. During a consultation, Dr. Daraei will assess your facial structure, skin elasticity, and aesthetic goals to determine if an upper eyelid lift is the right solution for you.

Upper Eyelid Lift Procedure

An upper eyelid lift is typically performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of correction required. The procedure involves making an incision along the natural eyelid crease, allowing for the removal of excess skin and repositioning or removing fat as needed. The remaining skin is carefully smoothed and tightened to create a youthful appearance.

Upper Eyelid Lift Recovery

Recovery from an upper blepharoplasty is generally well tolerated. Mild swelling and bruising are common in the first week, gradually subsiding over the following days. Keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses can help minimize swelling. Most patients can return to normal activities within seven to ten days, with final results becoming more noticeable as healing progresses. Since the incision is hidden within the eyelid crease, any scarring is minimal and well-concealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an upper blepharoplasty take?

An upper blepharoplasty on both sides takes approximately 30 minutes for routine anatomy. For more complex anatomy, the procedure can take up to 1 hour.

What issues can an upper blepharoplasty address?

An upper blepharoplasty can address a number of eye concerns including excess skin and hooded eyelids, excess fat, and sometimes droopy eyelids. The procedure can also give you a more youthful appearance and smooth out lines and wrinkles.

When can I return to work after an upper blepharoplasty?

Most patients are able to return to work within 7-10 days. That said, it can greatly depend on the type of job you have and how well your recovery is going. If you have a more labor-intensive job, you will likely need more time off.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for an upper blepharoplasty?

If you are able to use your fingers to pinch excess skin on your upper eyelid and you feel this excess skin makes you look tired/heavy/aged, then you’re likely a good candidate. However, the best way to know if you’re a good candidate for an upper blepharoplasty is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Daraei. He will review your medical history and listen to concerns before determining if this is the right procedure for you. On top of that, you should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations.

Is anesthesia used with an upper blepharoplasty?

This depends on the anatomy, personal preferences, and if additional procedures are performed. An upper blepharoplasty alone can be performed in the office with only local anesthesia (numbing medicine only without going to sleep). For more complex cases, or if additional procedures are performed at the same time, like facelifts, necklifts, rhinoplasties, then the entire surgery including the upper eyelid surgery is done under anesthesia. There are also some patients who prefer to be sedated and that can be arranged as well. Broadly speaking, at Daraei Facial Plastic Surgery, we use local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia and both can be used for an upper blepharoplasty.

When will most of the swelling go away after an upper blepharoplasty?

Most of your swelling will dissipate within 1-2 weeks after surgery. That said, some residual swelling may stick around for up to three months.

Is an upper blepharoplasty painful?

Upper blepharoplasty is not considered a very painful procedure. During the procedure, we will use local anesthetic to numb the area. This is the only painful portion of the procedure. Afterwards, once you’re completely numb, you won’t feel any of the surgical portion of the procedure. After an upper blepharoplasty, you may have some discomfort, but Tylenol along is often enough. Dr. Daraei will also prescribe pain medication in the event that you have more than mild pain to ensure a smooth recovery.

“Would do it Again!”

Dr. Paul Daraei performed blepharoplasty on both my eyes. He removed the very pronounced bags from under my eyes and removed tissue from my upper eyelids that made it look like I did not have eyebags, when my eyes were open. Let me say this is the best thing I have done for my appearance and would do it again!

“I love the results”

Dr. Daraei was initially recommended to me by a friend. I was particularly picky about who I wanted to do my rhinoplasty because I have ethnic features and I've also heard of people needing more expensive repeat procedures to fix their first rhinoplasty.
He has made the experience very smooth by being thorough, reassuring, and patient. I am about a year post op and I love the results, can't recommend him enough!

“I never felt rushed”

During the consultation all my questions were answered and Dr.
Daraei suggested the tissue removal from my eyelids. He mentioned the slightly swollen look that I thought was a sinus condition. When he showed me how much of my eyelid was hidden, l was amazed. He then took the time to explain the procedures I might want and answered every question I had. At no time did he make me feel pressured or rushed or that he had somewhere else to go.

“Dr. Daraei is the best doctor”

If you're interested in rhinoplasty, Dr. Daraei is the best doctor to go to! I came to him with a deviated nose and severe breathing issues.
Now, only a month out of surgery, my breathing is amazing and my nose looks beautiful! I cannot say enough amazing things about Dr. Daraei and his work!!

“Absolutely no Judgment”

This was my first foray into the world of plastic surgery. While I try to keep myself in shape, the condition around my eyes made me look old and tired. Of course, I was nervous when I met with Dr. Daraei and his staff for the consultation. Everyone was very nice and there was absolutely no judgment projected toward me by any of the staff.
In fact, the entire staff and Dr. Daraei seemed genuinely enthusiastic about helping me feel better about my appearance.
